The Johnson City Police Department is part of a multi-jurisdictional SWAT Team, "METRO SWAT", comprised of members of the Johnson City, Binghamton and Vestal Police Departments. METRO SWAT responds to critical incidents that occur in the City of Binghamton, Village of Johnson City, and the Town of Vestal. METRO SWAT can also be summoned to support agencies in other areas by request.
The members are highly trained and receive ongoing special training in tactics and weapons and work as a team to counter special situations. METRO SWAT has the responsibility of responding to any situation that requires specialized weapons and tactics. These situations include, but are not limited to, the following:
The team training involves specialized tactics to enable them to end critical situations with non-lethal force if at all possible. The team members are very dedicated and are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
This multi-jurisdictional SWAT team is one of only a handful of teams in New York State that is accredited by the New York State Division of Criminal Justices Services.
