Johnson City NY Police Officer Louis Cioci was awarded the Medal of Valor by US President Obama for his heroic actions that occurred on March 31, 2014.
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced in 2015 that Johnson City Police Department Patrolman Louis J. Cioci is the recipient of the New York State Police Officer of the Year Award. Patrolman Cioci was recognized for his actions in response to an incident in which a gunman killed a fellow Johnson City police officer and then opened fire on a busy street. He is credited with preventing the shooter from harming civilians caught in the midst of the dangerous event.
In May 2016, the N. Arch Street Bridge in Johnson City, NY was renamed the David W. Smith, Jr. Memorial Bridge in honor of Officer David W. Smith, Jr. who was tragically killed in the line of duty on 3/31/2014. Officer Smith served and laid down his life for the Johnson City community, and this is another token to honor his sacrifice and to keep his memory alive to all those who travel this bridge on a daily basis.
